Profile

Michelle Droettboom has been painting for over 25 years. For 45 years Michelle worked as a speech-language pathologist focusing on preschool children with speech and language disorders during the day, and as an artist painting during any available minute after her own three children went to bed! She is "self-taught"....with the help of hours and hours of painting, many workshops, and lots of books! Now retired, it is time to play, experiment, and create fabulous art!
Painting requires constant decision making; some conscious, some intuitive. It is the same creative dance she used to do in therapy with her children with Autism...constantly asking "What would happen if we tried this?" Michelle feels that everything she has done before gives her the courage to try the new things that come next!"

Michelle's painting style is loose, "wet", and constantly changing. Michelle loves the feeling of dropping paint onto the paper or canvas and allowing what happens to take her to the next step in a very dynamic way. She loves paint that moves around and does the unexpected. Michelle's first love is watercolor, but she is now experimenting with acrylics trying to find a consistency that let's the paint and her brush "swish" freely as she paints. Often the paint goes on and then the "let's see what happens" begins. It may not be the best path toward a finished painting, but it is the most fun.
Michelle is an enthusiastic teacher as well. Her love of experimentation enables her students to try new ideas and gets the creative energy flowing. Michelle is constantly excited to say "Let's try that!" whenever she finds a new tool, paper, paint, product, or idea! Any new idea can provide the basis for the next lesson. It is all about having fun, and watching to see what happens!
During the 2020 Covid craziness Michelle organized a small group of painters to try painting "en plein air" (outside) around Kelowna, B.C. It was fun to find little hidden away locations where the artists could meet, socially distance, chat, and paint. Check out Michelle's Gallery to see the results.
Michelle Droettboom's work can be found in private collections in Australia, the Bahamas, England, Canada and the United States. Michelle's work has been displayed in art shows and won awards in Canada, the United States and the Bahamas.
